When a person spends years eating large amounts of refined carbohydrates, insulin levels remain chronically high and cells become less responsive and thus resistant to insulin. As a consequence, little glucose gets burned off and blood sugar remains high. Elevated glucose oxidizes and produces free radicals. High glucose levels cause other problems as well. Glucose can bind to proteins and cause glycation which directly effects gene expression and protein synthesis thereby accelerating aging. Aside from its antioxidant effects, Alpha Lipoic acid (ALA) has also been shown to lower blood sugar levels by increasing insulin sensitivity.
